Whitevale Golf Club Recognized for Environmental Excellence

Toronto, Ontario, August 24, 2004 — Whitevale Golf Club has achieved designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System (ACSS), the educational division of Audubon International. Brian Sambleson, Audubon Coordinator, has led the effort to obtain sanctuary status and is being recognized for Environmental Stewardship by Audubon International. Whitevale Golf Club is the 45th course in Canada and the 504th in the world to receive this honour.

“Whitevale Golf Club has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. It is to be commended for its efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property” said Shawn Williams, Environmental Technician for the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programs. “To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that it is maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas”, explained Williams. These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.

“Whitevale is especially proud of this accomplishment.” stated Brian Sambleson, Audubon Coordinator. “The certification process involved a committee of members and greens staff, and took nearly three and a half years to complete. Our members have always been concerned about the environment and have taken significant interest in achieving this designation. ”

Whitevale Golf Club is a member-owned equity golf club, located just 30 minutes from downtown Toronto. Whitevale was built in 1959 on the banks of Duffins Creek near the Hamlet of Whitevale. In 1999 the members purchased the lands from the Ontario government, converting it into a private, equity golf club.
