  • The prolonged heat has the turf stressed (especially poa in and around our collars), and some turf has been lost. Please avoid walking on and off the greens in the same areas, and limit traffic to the dead spots that have been re-seeded.
  • In case you missed it last week, bunkers will remain closed until after Club Championships and will tentatively begin to open for play Friday August 15.
  • The extreme heat has prevented us from executing two topdressing events over the last month, and as a result greens are softer than ideal right now, making the ball marks even worse. Please remember to fix your own and a few others on each and every green.

August Happenings at the Clubhouse

Summer is in full swing, and we’ve got a few exciting events lined up this August to keep you well-fed and refreshed while enjoying everything the club has to offer. Here’s what’s coming up:

Burger & Brew Night – Friday, August 9th | 5:30pm-9:30pm

We’re kicking off a brand-new event this season: Burger & Brew Night! Join us on the patio for an evening of burgers, brews, and great company. For $25, you’ll enjoy a freshly grilled burger and a cold pint of beer. Labatt will be on-site pouring their favourites, so you can sip, sample, and enjoy the summer vibes. No reservations needed—just come hungry and ready to relax with fellow members and friends.

Civic Holiday BBQ – Monday, August 4th

Celebrate the long weekend with a classic clubhouse BBQ. We’ll be grilling all day long, so whether you’re playing a round or just popping by for a bite, we’ll have your BBQ favourites hot and ready. It’s a perfect way to enjoy the Civic Holiday in a casual setting.

Spring Honey Now Available – $12 per jar

Our fresh batch of Spring Honey is now in stock! Harvested from the bees right here at Whitevale, this small- batch honey is bottled with care and always a member favorite. It’s perfect for sweetening your tea, drizzling over toast, or pairing with your summer charcuterie boards. Jars are available for $12 at the clubhouse- be sure to grab yours while supplies last.

New Menu Launch

Due to the launch of the new menu we will not be having any features for the next two weeks including fish and chips Friday. However we will have Prime Rib on Sunday.

We look forward to seeing you at these events and enjoying these summer moments together. Stay tuned for more happenings as we make the most of the season!

The Set-Up Shot

If you’re a golfer who needs 3 shots to reach some par 4s, pay special attention to the “set-up” shot in that 3 stroke sequence. The “set-up” shot is the middle one - the centre of the Oreo cookie. Your goal on this shot is not just to advance the ball as far as you can, but rather to place it in a position giving yourself the best possible chance to succeed on the approach shot.

Take the 6th hole for instance. Let’s assume you’ve hit a good drive, leaving you 200 yards from the green - too far for you to reach. Rather than defaulting to a 3 wood, leaving yourself a scary 25 yard pitch shot off a tight lie, maybe the “right” play on the set-up shot would be to only advance the ball 120 yards. From 80 yards, you’ll be able to make a full swing with a short iron - a much easier proposition than the 25 yard pitch. It’s golf, so there’s no guarantee you’re going to knock that wedge tight, but by dividing that 200 yards into a 120-80 yard sequence, you’ve increased your odds of having a good hole. I’d call that smart golf.

Next week I’ll talk about how to play explosion shots from our new bunkers while the new sand is settling in.
