Are You a Swinger or a Hitter?

In golf, there’s a fine line between swinging and hitting. To play your best golf, you definitely want to be applying the former not the latter.

A swinging motion is an interrupted movement during which the clubhead more or less builds its own speed as it travels along its natural arc. In the golf swing, the lower body’s job is to provide support and add assistance during this process.

A hitting motion in golf is one where the golfer interferes with the swing motion, by adding disruptive energy into the mix. Primarily this unwanted “hitting” motion is caused by an improper use of the hands and arms. Unfortunately for many golfers, this primitive urge to “hit” at an object is hard to resist.

To explain things further, picture a child on a swing going back and forth. If you are pushing them correctly, you can make them go higher by applying a smooth, rhythmic push. In this case, you’re continuing and enhancing the swing motion.

Conversely, you can ruin the poor kid’s fun by pushing in a jerky, random way that is at odds with the swing’s natural flow. This disruptive shove during a swing ride has the same negative consequences that the hitting motion has in golf.

Next week, I’ll talk about how to turn your golf hit into a golf swing.
