Swing the Clubhead

Last week we discussed the difference between a hitting and a swinging motion in golf. Swinging is good, hitting is bad.

To capture the feel of a swinging motion, take a golf club and swing it back and forth slowly, loosening your hands and body until you can feel the weight of the clubhead moving throughout the entirety of the motion. Closing your eyes will help capture this feeling. Notice how once you initiate this motion, the clubhead basically swings by itself. Your body and hands are responding and reacting to it as it tracks along its orbit.

Next, gradually increase the tempo of this back and forth motion. The clubhead is your pole star; you can swing as fast as you want provided you don’t compromise your connection with its weight in motion.

Finally, try applying this motion with a golf ball. If you’re able to maintain what you were doing, the ball will simply get in the way of the club as it reaches the low point of its arc. As with no ball, your body should remain relaxed and there should be no “effort” or hit applied. When done correctly, the ball should melt off the clubface and travel further than you expect. Through practice, see if you can incorporate this pure swinging motion into your full shots. It’ll be worth the effort.
