St. Paul's On the Hill Food Bank Donation

We want to give a huge shout-out to the Hot Stove Club for their generous sponsorship of the 2025 Whitevale Men’s Member Guest event. Thanks to their support, our winners received fantastic gift certificates that were a big hit. But the good deeds didn't stop there. As suggested by the Hot Stove Club, we matched their sponsorship with a cash donation to the St. Paul’s On the Hill Food Bank in Pickering. We're proud to share that the donation was made this past week!

To avoid interest charges and keep your account up to date, please pay your accounts within 30 days. Ex: August statement needs to be paid by September 30.

Members are emailed chits for most purchases immediately upon being charged. You are now able to see what these charges are on the website statements. Open your statements, click on the chit number of the area you are questioning and your chit with charges will be shown. Some items like entry fees, raffles, etc. will not show as a chit but the area should be able to show you what you purchased. Ex: Lessons with Kevan, 50/50, etc.

A reminder we are still asking members to provide us a headshot for the website.

Events
  • Topdressing and aerification of tees will be taking place next week. There may be times when tee blocks are off the tee deck during play as we complete the process, but the tee can still be used
  • Sand is continuing to be added into bunkers that require it. A reminder that bunkers will be soft until this new sand has a chance to settle and firm up
  • We are dealing with a significant number of unraked bunkers daily and need your help! Now that we have lost our student labour, we don't have staff available to rake daily, thus it is even more important to do your part and rake the bunkers after play.
  • A reminder to avoid walking over any newly seeded areas on collars or approaches as we try to recover these areas from the summer stress

Fall Derby

  • Registration closes this Saturday September 13th at midnight.
  • Please make sure to update the note section with the following requests.
    • Tee selection – Must have played 75% of all rounds from your tee choice
    • Replacement players, please not what day they will be playing.
    • Tee Time requests, “A” members do receive priority on these requests.
  • Format change, due to the complex scoring for the “Team Format” this has been moved to Day 1. Golf Genius does not support this format and to use live scoring for Day 2 we have switched the days the two formats will be played.
  • Payout, due to requests from the Spring Derby and a collective decision by the Golf Committee. 30% of the field will be paid out for the overall winners. There will be no payouts for Day 1 and Day 2.
  • Men’s League closing SG is live on Fore Tee’s for registration.
  • 2pm SG on Wednesday September 24th.
  • Open Men’s League Members Only.
  • $50++ for dinner and prizing.
  • Come celebrate our 2025 Men’s League Champions!
  • As available tee times are reduced due to daylight, getting your desired time does tend to get harder.
  • We have a Round Bias Lottery system here at Whitevale, all group weight is calculated by number of rounds played in the last 14 days.
    • Example: Cam Hadley (8), Dan Campbell (6), Michael Hoover (3), Ryan Hargrave (5) = 5.5 score for the group.
    • Guests are equally weighted to the host Member. Ex: Cam Hadley (8), any guests would be allocated 8.
  • The lower your group score is the more likely you are to get your tee time.
  • Deviation is also taken into consideration when all lottery requests are assigned.
    • Highly requested times will result in a higher deviation.
    • Deviation is fairly distributed to all members when tee times are assigned based on the group weight.
    • This may look like the lottery is not being run correctly but it is in fact doing what it is supposed to.
    • Example: Cam Hadley, 8am request, group weight 8, 11am allocated tee time = 120min deviation
    • Example: Dan Campbell, 11am request, group weight 6, 12pm allocated tee time = 60min deviation
  • Every day we run the lottery organically and do not change any tee times.
    • Only unassigned groups get moved to the first open tee time of the day.
  • This is a very basic explanation, please visit the reference materials for a full explanation.

Team Fuschia Takes 2025 Solheim Cup

After a glorious and fresh afternoon of competition on Sunday, September 7th, the Fuschia Team emerged victorious over the Purple Team to regain the Solheim Cup – 16 1/2 points to 7 1/2 points.

Twenty-four competitive ladies, all flaunting their team colours, battled it out for the 18th annual event, which was a three-games-in-one format: better-ball, alternate shot, and singles matches.

Following the match, results were announced and war stories abounded amid champagne toasts and speeches and cheers.

The trophy was presented to Fuschia Team Captain Linda Briggs by Purple Team Captain Anne Trimble.

Of note: Historically over the 18 years – Purple has won 9 times and Fuschia has won 9 times!

Putting from the Bunkers

An interesting consequence of the new sand is that on many greenside traps it extends right up to the bunkers’ lips, effectively making a ramp for putting the ball out.

This method may only be a temporary option that goes away once the sand settles fully, but, for now , if you’re struggling hitting an explosion shot, you at least have a plan B.

Be aware that not all the greenside bunkers allow for this loophole, so you’ll have to pick and choose the ones from which you can escape with your Scotty.

If you are resorting to this method, it’s likely the golf gods are sending you a message: “Learn how to hit an explosion shot”. Clipping the perfect amount of sand with your sand wedge and watching your ball float out of the bunker and dance to a stop right beside the hole is a far more satisfying experience than flailing it out with your flat stick.
