1.16 Golf Event Cancellation
The decision to suspend play on the golf course due to dangerous weather is made by the automatic lightning warning system with oversight and monitoring to take place by the on-duty Pro Shop staff. If there is a lightning strike within 7.5 km of the clubhouse the alarm will sound. Once the dangerous weather has passed and the course is deemed playable, play will resume.
If the dangerous weather persists while a golf event is in progress, a committee consisting of the Club Captain (providing he or she is not playing in the event) or a designated member from the Golf Committee, the Head Professional, the General Manager and Golf Course Superintendent will be called upon within one hour of the suspension of play to make a decision about the event. A decision made within this time period may include a decision to continue to wait a further period of time to understand the impact of the weather event on the golf course and the resultant playing conditions.
For a single-day or a multi-day event, the committee may select an alternate date (if one is available) or cancel the event if no suitable date can be found and the integrity of the event cannot be maintained. If in a multi-day competition, a round of play is unable to be started, or a round that has been started is unable to be completed, the committee has the option to cancel the day in question and use the results (scores) from the previous day(s) of the multi-day event to determine the final results of the competition.
For a multi-day event, the committee will assess the specific circumstances to determine what action to take. If an individual round within a multi-day event is cancelled, all scores and penalties during that round are cancelled, and the "cut" parameters within the event itself still apply.
In circumstances where an entire round cannot be completed, the option to use the front 9 score towards the overall total can be used. In that situation, everyone in the field would have to have completed the same 9 holes. If there is the potential for bad weather and it may affect an event, participants will be notified before they begin their round with any updates.
The basis for a decision made by the committee will focus on maintaining the integrity of the event, ensuring the spirit of the competition, as well as ensuring the playability of the golf course. Members who depart the club prior to a decision being rendered by the committee do so with the knowledge that they will be disqualified from a competition should the event continue following a weather delay.
